Dear IPPNW Students,

as you may know already, next year, the city of Basel will host the IPPNW World Congress and, true to tradition, we're organizing a bike tour to the congress in order to raise the issue of nuclear abolition in different European countries. We've been to Estonia, Russia, Finnland, the UK and India on our bikes ... now its time to take on Central Europe... so, from August 14th-24th, around 30 daring cyclists from all over the world will bike up the Rhine River, passing through Germany, France and Switzerland on their way to the 2010 IPPNW World Congress in Basel. During the tour, we will make our call for a Nuclear Weapons Free Europe heard, will meet with media representatives and politicians, hold public demonstrations and visit the last remaining nuclear weapons base in Germany in order to add our voices to a loud call for finally removing these remnants of the Cold War from Europe. More than 20 years after the fall of the Iron Curtain, young doctors and medical students from East and West, from the wealthy industrialized countries and from the Global South will join together once more for a bike tour again nuclear weapons. Are you interested?

You can find all the important information about the bike tour at http://www.ippnw-students.org/BAN

Please be sure to send us a complete application form to This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it if you want to apply, as there are only a limited number of spots available. For all the rest, who do not want to bike, or do not have time, but want to support the bike tour, there's the possibility to sell raffle tickets at your university, in your circle of friends or amongst your relatives. One ticket costs 100 US-Dollar and there's 300 in total. One lucy winner will be chosen for the grand prize. That means a 1/300 chance to win 10.000 US-Dollar! And the rest of the proceeds goe directly towards the BAN-Tour and the IPPNW student movement.

More information is coming your way soon, but please have a look at the website and contact us if you have any questions..

We look forward to hearing from you.. All the best,

  • Iran and nuclear weapons. A personal reflection.
In the nineteen sixties there were many who believed that there was a military threat from China against  Europe. “Optimists learn Russian, pessimists learn Chinese” was a common joke. “Whatever you say, China is hell on earth” I heard a respected politician say in 1965.
